Supplemental Instruction – Overview

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Definition

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program built on
peer-assisted study sessions. SI sessions are regular, informal reviews where students
compare notes, discuss readings, build study tools, and practice predicting test items. Sessions are led by
SI Leaders—students who previously did well in the course, attend lectures, take notes,
and model effective learning strategies.

Purpose

  • Increase retention in historically difficult courses
  • Improve student grades in targeted courses
  • Increase overall graduation rates

Participants

Access SI is a free service for all students enrolled in the targeted course.
Approach Non-remedial: the focus is on high-risk courses, not high-risk students.
Participation Voluntary and open to students with diverse backgrounds and preparedness levels.
Stigma No remedial stigma—course targeting helps normalize attendance for everyone.
